# People and roles

> Invite people into your organization, give them roles, and remove them.

Midplane Cloud is invite-only for now: we invite each organization's first
owner, and owners and admins invite everyone else. An organization lives in one
region (EU or US), and a person can belong to several organizations. Switch
between them in the organization menu at the top left, which also leads to
**Organization settings**.

## Roles

| Role | What they can do |
| - | - |
| Owner | Everything, including making and removing owners. An organization always keeps at least one. |
| Admin | Manage projects, gateways, policy, approvals and people, except owners. |
| Member | Use the projects: connect agents, make their own personal access tokens, see approval requests and the Query log. They don't change policy or decide on held writes. |

Nobody changes their own role.

## Invite someone

<Steps>
  <Step title="Send the invitation">
    In **Organization settings**, under **Invitations**, enter their email
    address, pick a role and choose **Invite**. Only owners invite owners.
  </Step>

  <Step title="They join">
    The email's link works for seven days, and only for someone signed in with
    that address, so a forwarded link is useless to anyone else. Someone new
    chooses **Create an account**, verifies their address from the email we
    send, then chooses **Join**. Someone with an account signs in and chooses
    **Join**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check that it worked">
    They appear under **Members**, with the role you gave them.
  </Step>
</Steps>

If the email doesn't arrive, the dialog after **Invite** shows the link once:
pass it on another way. **Resend** sends the same link again for another seven
days; **Revoke** makes it stop working.

## Change roles and remove people

Owners and admins change a member's role or remove them under **Members**.
Removing someone ends their access at once: agents they connected lose access
to the organization's projects, and their personal access tokens stop working
on its gateways after the next sync. Inviting them again doesn't bring either
back.

## Leave an organization

Anyone can leave from **Organization settings**, with the same effect on their
agents and tokens. The only owner can't leave: make someone else owner first.
